WOWs of NPM '18

Happy Poetry Friday

This week's round-up is hosted by the lovely and talented Irene Latham at Live Your Poem. Please stop by and soak up some beauty, especially her Artspeak series. Your soul will thank you.

I wish I could have slowed April down. National Poetry Month is so rich it's hard to take it all in. My growing digital journal of snippets, words, prompts, drafts and images is at 50 slides and my old-fashioned paper journal is fuller too.

I have great material and ideas to go back to later. I'd thought I'd share wows that helped me learn and grow.

National Poetry Month Wows

I gather craft ideas, advice and encouragement from these blogs. The Poem Farm and No Water River are spectacular. I have many drafts of first lines and ideas that started there. Today's Little Ditty has excellent interviews --don't miss B.J. Lee. It's like a writing class for rondel in a blog post.

I have fallen in love with The Skinny. Drafts above are not true skinnies. However, the number of lines and the built in repetition was a great template for drafting. Fun!

These two books are wows! Sketch Book Dares (Abrams 2017) was given to me by a sweet friend. I am having a creative blast sketching--which has provided many oasis moments. Outside of her book, author/illustrator Laura Lee Gulledge's blogs/websites are inspiring as well.  I'm still celebrating being included on Team Imperfect. I received my author's copy this week. What a beautiful anthology. Tabatha Yeatts has really out done herself.

I'm impressed with every poem that comes from Irene Latham. She has a perfect combination of laser-like focus for the poetic and a gentleness that makes you feel like she's holding your hand. The 2018 Progressive Poem in Kidlitosphere is her creation--now in it's 6th year--and I joined in with a line on day 13.

Of all the poetry subscriptions out there....these are my steadfast and dependable buddies. I get variety of genre, audience, style and inspiration daily.

Poetry was in the news a LOT this month. I perused articles, listed to radio spots and interviews. My pinterest Poetry board grew! I love being able to have these pieces save for future reference.

What are your Poetry Month '18 WOWs? Will you share--Please?

  2. How is it possible that April is nearly over?! This month has just gone by in a blur! Thankfully, thanks to the Poetry Friday community, I get to keep poetry in my life every month. :-)

  3. We're book-mates then. Congrats to you. What fun to be part of a book with such a good topic. What great work you've been doing this month. More power to you! I saw on twitter that my site didn't load. I don't know what happened. It seems to be working now. Here is the link in case the one at Irene's site doesn't work: https://friendlyfairytales.com/2018/04/26/words-keep-me/

  4. What a lovely post, Linda. You reminded me of a few favorites like Poetry 180, & I've tried to keep up with others, too. There's been so much! Congratulations on having a poem in Imperfect. I have my copy, but have only browsed so far. Thanks for all!

  5. Thanks for sharing your WOWs, Linda!! (And thank you for including IMPERFECT in them!) Seeing all of the impressive things that people are doing this month has been a big WOW for me. I agree about needing to come back later to savor what everyone has been doing! 30 days isn't enough :-)

  7. Great overview of poetry resources, Linda. My poetry wow for this month was Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong's Poetry Rodeo at the Texas Library Association. Hearing so many passionate, interesting children's poets share their work recharged my creative batteries.

  8. You, dear Linda, are a poetry WOW with your daily writing habit and the bright light you shine on poetry in and outside of the classroom! Alas, I think I could probably spend a whole year on everything I missed this month, but we do what we can. Thank you for giving me the skinny on what a skinny is, and also for the kind words about TLD. I'm so grateful for your poetry presence in my life!

  10. What a rich collection you've assembled–it's wonderful that you've made time to mark many of the happenings from the last month. Congrats on your poem in "IMPERFECT" it's beautiful, I just received my copy and am reading through it. Thanks for all here Linda!

  11. I love this plethora of poetry resources. I purchased dollar store mini notebooks for my AP Lit students to use for writing this month as they presented poetry (AP Lit focus) and art. It was fabulous. They're working on ekphrasis poems now, so I love the resources from the Poetry Foundation. I also love Poetry Out Loud. Their videos are wonderful for my speech classes. Button Poetry and TED are also favorites for spoken word poems.

  12. Wow! This is a rich collection of poetry resources! Have you seen the Facebook page for Dan Rather's WHAT UNITES US? Most Thursdays, it celebrates #Verseday by sharing a poem or interview with a poet (and sometimes other genres that have a poetic flair).

  13. I gave up on keeping on top of anything this month except reading poetry, and I haven't been on top of that either. I started getting subscriptions from some of the sites you mentioned and have loved having an inbox full of poems in the morning.

  14. Linda, you have been quite busy this month with all "things" poetry-related. Your Wows are Wonderful. I pinned your skinnies and love the Librarian one. I have found that keeping up with everyone's poetry has been difficult. There is so much that I won't to read and so much to do that the two don't often match up. This morning it is raining and so I am taking advantage of the time to catch up. My PF post invites everyone to a May challenge with a new gallery. I hope you stop by to create.

  15. This post is so rich in poetry goodness...but I'm most intrigued by your digital journal. Have you written about it? Could you send me a link or some tips or hints? Seems like a fun thing to try with my 5th graders.

    1. I'm sure a digital journal is something students could do. I simply use power point slides to copy & paste text and snip/grab images. I use the slides for ideas later. It helps me feel like I'm not losing my ideas---which can cause a bit of anxiety in my busy life. Also, if I want to draft a poem, I add a text box next to the prompt. I generally create a power point for each month and save it in a file. This month, there are so many prompts that I like, I am going to print out my slides so I can take a three ring binder of these and other important ones on trips with my family. That's really it. I simply like the space better than a word document.
