Poetic Luncheon

It's the first Friday of the school year. I've had so much fun!

Literally, kids have been gasping with glee, skipping and pointing out favorite books to each other in the library. What joy. The kids are going to be alright. Really.

Last Sunday, I had the nicest time visiting our friend Carol Varsalona at her beautiful new home in Virginia.  She was so gracious, opening the door a bit early and keeping up with my chatter. It's incredibly fun and nice to meet a Poetry Friday friend in real life.

Carol's print...and Linda's Ekphrastic Skinny

We knew we had to share our meeting somehow for Poetry Friday...talked about it and forgot and then as I was leaving to get ready for the first day of school on Monday we quickly threw each other a prompt and a wave goodbye until next time.

Carol's print...and Linda's Ekphrastic Skinny

I admired some of the lovely Harrison Fisher antique prints Carol is putting up on her walls. She sent me some photos of those and I gave her a basket of goodies to think about.

The skinny form seemed to fit these classic beauties.

Isn't that great? I wish we could all meet.

Hamish and I found an old postcard for sale on eBay and thought it needed a good story...suitable for a Grandox. Have a peek at his padlet.

  1. Linda, what fun we had last Sunday. Now, I am recreating the day in my head and on paper for posterity. This was a very good challenge and we accomplished it. Thanks for being my poetry swap partner in our own version of a summer swap. You did a marvelous job with the skinny format. I shall always remember these poems and I think I will take a screenshot and add each poem to the back of each framed print. That would be something for the next generation to think about. BTW the opera gloves poem is just right. I can imagine a lady whispering that to another. Of course, it is improper to take off your gloves in public! Great job. Each one of your poems are wonderful. I did not think you would create poems for all the prints but you did with ease. Hamish did a wonderful job on his poem story. I happen to really enjoy your researching time periods and inserting interesting facts that make your poems plausible coming from Hamish's mouth. I am glad that your first week was a good one for both you and your students.

  2. The skinny seems perfect for these, Linda. I feel there is some plum in mouth to accompany the upright posture and elegance, and the skinny conveys that. And I could not be more delighted to hear of you and Carol meeting - and imagining more meetings in the future. Oh joy! (Also delighted at your joyous start to the new school year. You make ME want to skip!)

  3. Now I'm wondering what you and Carol wore to your luncheon. I doubt long silk gloves. Now I'm wondering what it would feel like to wear them. Glad you had fun.

  4. I read Carol's post & am jealous that you were able to meet & spend time together, nothing nicer than meeting a PF friend. How wonderful that you will write to Carol's antique prints. I love the "voice" about those opera glasses - snooty!

  5. Long silk gloves in a Virginia summer--I get itchy at the thought!

  6. But what I really loved in your post was the statement, "The kids are going to be alright. Really." Music to this retired teacher's ears.

  9. Oh lucky you to be able to see Carol's new home in Virginia. We have met at a few conventions and she is originally from where I call home now, while I was from her old home area of Long Island! I am sure Carol has great style. (I saw a few photos she posted of a baby shower on fb, I think. Lovely. I also love how she decorates with the vintage art. Your poems go hand and hand. I am partial to skinny poems! And ekphrastic poetry. I enjoyed this post a lot. Thanks, Linda. Thanks, Carol.

  10. How exciting that you and Carol were able to meet up! I didn't connect the dots to realize that you two are now neighbors. What fun! The postcards are wonderful and I love your poetic responses, especially April 4th. Great skinnies!

  11. Love your Harrison Fisher inspired poems Linda, especially the fashionable lady in opera gloves–and your oval with poem fits so well too! What fun that you and Carol were able to meet and spend time together, thanks!

  12. Wow, what fun, Linda. I'm so happy for you and Linda to have that time together. I hope I will be able to meet you and other PF friends someday. Very sweet skinny poems. I like the repeating words you chose because they added to the poem and didn't distract. Love the attitude of the woman in the silk gloves. Your poem is perfect. The ekphrastic poem is super too. And Hamish, too, as always! I'm glad you had a good happy first week. What a perfectly lovely assessment: "The kids are going to be alright. Really." Thanks.

  13. What wonderful inspiration for poems! I think the lady with the silk opera gloves is my favorite - the skinny poem emulates the long, slender glove, and you've captured her demeanor perfectly.

So cool that you and Carol could meet in real life and swap some poetic inspiration.
