Greetings, Poets
By this time next week we will be answering doorbells and knocks of trick-or-treaters. Are you ready? The price of chocolate has gone up but it hasn't stopped me from getting our favorites.
Halloween is such a fun topic for poetry. My notebook from this week is full of Halloweeny poems. It's even a Jack-o-lantern World on the World padlet.

Thank you, Carol, at Beyond Literacy for hosting all our round-up links this week.
Thank you for this Jack poem, Linda! Not a lot of trick-or-treating in these parts anymore...it's mostly Trunk or Treat events. I miss opening the door to all those costumed friends! xo
ReplyDeleteThanks for the evocative Halloweeny poem, Linda! It's always a toss-up here whether we get trick-or-treaters each year, so it's hard to know how much candy to buy. We're an all-chocolate household, so I guess . . . we could "force" ourselves to eat the leftovers. :D
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the Jack-o-Lantern protecting from fright, instead of being frightening. Ruth, thereisnosuchthingasagodforsakentown.blogspot.com (Thanks for your email comment! :-))
ReplyDeleteHappy Halloween, Linda! Thank you for sharing your timely jack-o-lantern poem! Normally, we have a campfire at the end of our driveway and hand out treats - but not with the dry weather we've been having this year. I am thinking of other spooktacular ways to celebrate ...
ReplyDeleteIt's such a fun 'fright night' & you've shown those ups & downs, Linda. I love that the jack-o-lanterns are delightful welcomes. I know the squirrels love to munch them! I especially love seeing the little ones, perhaps their first time out, amazed that someone is giving them candy! Thanks for the Halloween poem!
ReplyDeleteOoh, that's a frightful jack-o-lantern! We don't get many trick or treaters, but we bought candy this morning, "just in case." Now I have to resist Twix bars for the coming week!
ReplyDeleteAww...I'm looking forward to the doorbell rings, too, Linda. I haven't carved a pumpkin in years, but your poem inspires so perhaps this week...
ReplyDeleteLinda, perhaps you should share your poem during library class. Unfortunately, we don't get trick or treaters in my community but I do love trick or treating with the little girls in their neighborhood. Have fun giving out your treats and then, of course, eating the left overs!
ReplyDeleteLove how your Jack-o-lantern is so inviting. We haven't gotten trick or treaters in years, but we always have back-up candy...just in case.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad we still have trick or treat. AJ sits out on the porch, greeting each group of "silly goblins" while parents wait out at the street. Our neighbors make coffee for the grown ups. It's a lovely evening of community. And, of course, chocolate!
ReplyDeleteAwww so sweet -- must go buy a bag of candy to be ready!
ReplyDeleteFun poem that puts me in the spirit. I just ordered matching costumes for me and Stella. Not sure if she will want to be a fairy, though. She has a matching werewolf with her brother. We will have no customers here, so I will go to Maggie's for grandkid fun and gumbo.
ReplyDeleteOh yay! So sweet! I love that you've been writing Halloween poems! I just figured out what I'm going to be for storybook pumpkin day--Princess in Black!
ReplyDeleteOops! Forgot to sign in. That one was me, Marcie. Also, it's storybook character day--not pumpkin day--gah! And...I thought of you today. I went to Candice Ransom's talk at SCBWI at GMU and she talked about her "off the page" projects related to her book. She mentioned lots of different projects you could do and one of them was junk journaling and I thought of my trio of poetry friends/also junk journalers.
DeleteI love a good Jack-o-lantern poem, Linda! We'll be carving a couple tomorrow. We usually get trick-or-treaters and it's always such fun to see them.
ReplyDeleteLinda, I am late to the party but arriving at last to savor this fantastic fall poem-pourri. Harjo's poem resonated with me deeply - a perfect SJT invitation. My granddaughter just turned three, so I offer "Three Song" in response here. I love your own riff on "Fall Song" as well as the jack-o-lantern poem reminding us of its origin. Many thanks for this glittering collection of gifts -- Fran
