Whirlwind Trip

Happy Poetry Friday

Don't miss festivities at http://buffysilverman.com/blog/. Thanks for hosting this busy week, Buffy!

My whirlwind poetry trip began Thanksgiving weekend when friends, reminded me of their invitation to me to go home with them to NYC. We've been talking about it for ages. And, we finally did it, traveling by train to New York and back to DC in a quick twenty-four hours or so.

I hadn't been to NYC forever. It was a treat to stay in Greenwich Village.

I found beautiful words everywhere.

At Pennsylvania Station, we found an envelope from Minnesota stuffed with dollar-bill origami and what looked like the beginnings of a poem or a prayer on a seat.

The maker was long gone. Maybe it was left to be found?

On the subway...

In the library between the lions, Patience, and Fortitude

And in the book I packed in my bag in case I had a minute to spare for reading--I didn't. That's OK. Winter break starts today!

The best poetry of all, of course, was time with my friends. We talked and laughed and looked and enjoyed all of it.

  1. I've never been to NYC, though I've seen it so many times on TV and read about it in so many books. If only it wasn't a six-hour flight! :'( I'm glad you had such a great, and inspiring, trip!

  4. I love NYC. I hope you saw the tree at Rockefeller Center. I always try to see that this time of year if I'm there. It's been too long.

  6. What a fun post--the best kind of whirlwind. I love "mirth purls family"! There are so many wonderful words to find when we take the time to notice! I'm so glad you enjoyed your time with friends and wish you the best of holidays! By the way, I suspect there's a story book lurking in your origami dollar find!

  9. I love NYC, so much energy and texture–thanks for sharing your rich trip with us. Isn't it fun all the poetry on the subway, I think every once in a while someone reads it, I do when I visit. The origami trees are fun, and your haiku is full of "mirth," it's beautiful, thanks!

  10. What a fun-filled day! Because I live so close to NYC, I am very spoiled that I can visit often. My favorite stop is the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where I always find works of art that inspire me. I love the knitting metaphor in your haiku!

  12. Thanks for taking us on your friend-cation! Like Molly, I have to wonder about the story in the origami money. Was it a gift that didn't make it to the recipient? I hope the person who made it assumes that someone like you found it :-) I love Gary Snyder's poem on the subway. Beautiful! Happy holidays, and thanks for the year of friendship!

  16. Look at those origami trees! I'd say the package was left to be found, and you and your friends were just the right people to appreciate them. So many words in your weekend, and we get to share them with you. I love that you photographed the discovered words. They make an awesome post. Your knitting haiku is delightful. May I share it with my daughter who is recovering from wrist surgery and cannot knit for weeks? We're all gathering at her house on Christmas, purling family with much mirth!

  18. Your visit to NYC was charmed in every way. I don't think you had time to literally knit, either (maybe on the train during your "sleepover"?), but clearly you whipped up a fresh scarf of fcloseness!
