Poetry Friday 5/10

Is it a beautiful day for soccer where you are? I hope so. Many friends we know are celebrating the book birthday of Soccerverse (Wordsong 2019), by Elizabeth Steinglass...who is our host for this week's round up.

Liz's book of poems about soccer make it perfect for just about all 32,000,987,000 students I know (OK, maybe that's hyperbole). Seriously, join in the celebration and visit her this week at her blog: Elizabeth Steinglass--Poetry for Children and Their Grownups.

Last week, Michelle Heidenrich Barnes interviewed Liz about lots of things including her new book at Today's Little Ditty. By the end of the interview, Liz had kicked up this month's Ditty Month Challenge (DMC) :

As High School graduation approaches, I've been absorbed in the fun and details of senior year with my daughter. Of course my ditty is related to graduation.

  1. Love your instruction poem. I took Michelle and Elizabeth up on the challenge this week, too. Your graduation cap would've been a nice addition to my Instructions To Wind poem :)

  2. This is wonderful, Linda. I love that ending! As ever, I'm impressed by how you take up a challenge, find inspiration in your life, and run with it--or fly! I'm still fiddling around with a couple possibilities for this challenge. It's such a good one, isn't it?

  3. Oh, LInda, this holds all the wishes you must have for your daughter. It's so beautiful. "you will not take flight/until it’s time." I know the feelings this month a little; my grandson graduates in a couple of weeks! Happy, poignant times for parents. Happy Mother's Day, too!

  7. Just right! I had plans to do this challenge today with my students, but alas, they called off school due to rain and street flooding. I do love this poem and the progression from sitting to flying. Congratulations!

  10. Linda, thank you for giving the world an intro to Liz's poem and the ditty for the month. Od course you would write about an inanimate object related to your daughter's graduation. Many congratulations are extended to her. Your poem is a delightful one. These lines provide the right inspiration to commemorate the day:
    Point four corners
    to a wide, new world..
The last lines give us the necessary flight into the world. Nice job. This inspires me to try one, also.

  13. Your poem is full of all the anticipation we feel as our children head out on their own. I love the idea of the cap as compass pointing "to a wide, new world." Well done! And congratulations to all!
