Not a mean poem...a meme poem: I saw a bird

Hello Poets,

Two weeks ago, Susan at Chicken Spaghetti invited us to write a poem based on any internet meme. She shared Donika Kelly's meme inspired poem, Poem to Remind Myself of the Natural Order of Things, which I fell in love with.

I try to avoid internet memes. However, while watching PBS News recently, there was a story of how I saw a bird is a current tik tok craze.

Perfect, I thought. I can get on board with I saw a bird...it's funny and kinda true. There's a kernel of science at the base of its silliness. If you don't know this meme, go to any social media account and search for, I saw a bird. The phrase is a connection test for couples.

When we make a bid for connection with such a mundane phrase, how our partner responds is the important, and often humorous fodder for internet meme-world.

Falling into this rabbit hole of giggles inspired me to create some poetry comics. I had a good time with photos I already have of my silly cats who love each other very much. The monet photo app helped me make photos look more like a cartoon.

First, a sedoka, a Japanese form based on a partner's bid for connection and response.

I just saw a bird
all puffed up and fluttery
strutting along the railing.

remember our first?
that bird we were both watching?
love is...sharing a window

Sometimes Senryu...

once upon a time
love was watching distant birds
wishing and purring

Of course, since the subject matter is my cats, I could have called the above senryu a haiku. But, the personification and alliteration with Sedoka makes me think senryu instead. To learn more about each form, click on the words above that will take you to a short description.

Make sure to visit Carol at The Apples in My Orchard for this week's round-up goodies.

  1. I don't know this meme! AND I love the poems. Wow, Linda. The emotion you packed into the senryu, with just twelve words. Knock me over with a feather.

  3. Well. You brought all your skills to this challenge -- photography, technology, comics, AND poetry. Both are fantastic, but that senryu is, to use your words, "chef's kiss!"

  4. I heard about "I saw a bird" a couple of days ago - rings true! Your kitties are delightful, as are your poems and pictures. If only we were half as perceptive and attentive as our furry family members.... :0)

  5. Awww, I love this.
I have seen a ton of 'bird' conversations and had not realized it was so deep!!! It has the same flavor of the conversations that begin with a woman asking what it is with guys and sticks, or guys and rocks - the memes remind us that humans are so weird, but seeking connection is a commonly held thing that binds us together, wishing and purring. So cute.

  7. Wow! Linda, you really nailed this challenge from your poetry group! I love how you incorporated your cats. I, also, was unfamiliar with this meme. (I don't watch many of them.) Thanks for sharing your work (very talented).

  9. I didn't know about the bird theory but that makes so much sense. At our house, we share so much quirky minutia that, "I saw a bird..." would immediately evoke an interested reaction ("What kind? What did you see? Do you know what I saw the other day?") :)

I love both of your poems, Linda, and what you did with this meme-to-poem challenge. Both poems convey that sweet, sweet relationship between your cats, and I also love the comic strip look you created! Poetry comics are such a great idea!

  10. Oh, Linda, the poetry comic is a delight! The edited photos are so great with the words added. Inspiring. I agree Sedoka and Senryu sound good together.

  11. Wow, Linda! Your layered creativity always bowls me over! I love both poems. The first one with that shared window is so sweet! The comic effects you created with your photos are wonderful. (I hadn't heard of this bird sensation, but we're both bird nerds, so that wouldn't be a good test in our house!)
