Hooray for Air Conditioning!

How are we doing Poets?

There's so much going on in our world right now it's hard to keep score. From Afghanistan to Haiti to the Pacific Northwest, there are serious, life-threatening situations -- oh, and hey, a pandemic still rages. I'm trying to keep up with the world and back-to-school and an air conditioning unit broken since Sunday. Ack! I thought I'd write an ode to our air conditioner. But you know what? It's too hot!

I do have a full and grateful heart for the lovely poetry swap items from Rebecca Herzog and Mary Lee Hahn. They are beautiful and delightfully practical for a poeming librarian.

Found Poem and bookmarks by Rebecca Herzog

old legends
constructed of layers, and
turn a circle
never end
all are mysterious corridors
that take you
to distant parts of the world

~Words found by Rebecca Herzog

Mary Lee created a custom haiku/dodoitsu oracle deck of phrases from Hamish's padlet. So fun!

Hamish and I have had many artistic disagreements already on what line goes where in our new poems. Thank you, Mary Lee! We love this so much.

Here are some haiku arranged by Hamish and me from the oracle deck.

Fun times with Hamish...who's generally agreeable to my suggestions.

There is a new poem on Hamish's padlet this week involving ancient cuneiform. Have a look:

Make sure to stop by The Apples in My Orchard for a full dose of poetry goodness. Thank you, Carol!

PS....we just got the air conditioner back! Woot!

  1. I am so glad your AC is back. Our temps have been near 100 the last few days. I am extremely grateful for AC. Our hearts just keep getting wounded over and over by the world news. Poet-friends like Becky and Mary Lee keep us hopeful and delighted by playful poetry.

  2. What thoughtful gifts! Thanks for sharing.

  3. Nothing like some sweet gifts to make you cooler, and AC helps, too! I went without in June, finally got a new unit this summer. I actually enjoyed having the windows open but it really was hot! I like the thought of those "mysterious corridors", Linda.

  4. Thank you for sharing your poetry swap treasures with us, Linda. I love Rebecca's found poem, and that oracle deck from Mary Lee is the best!

  5. Linda, hooray for A/C! Lovely gifts from Becky and Mary Lee. I love the cards that you and Hamish turned into haiku.

  6. I love the padlet phrases and how you can put them together, Linda! I will definitely have to check them out. Are they for sale anywhere? What a great resource! I had to laugh (sorry) when I read your AC was out. It's been hot here - low 90's - and we've kept the AC off because my husband is working on refinishing our window trim! UGH! Not the greatest time to pick to do it! Well, now I'll be the one happy the AC gets turned back on! Thanks for participating in the round up this week! Carol from The Apples in My Orchard!

    1. The oracle decks are one-of-a-kind...definitely not for sale! :-) I mined each of my swap partner's blogs for phrases they wrote (mostly not inside poems) that were 5 or 7 syllables. Then I created the deck with 8 5-syllable cards in one color and 8 7-syllable cards in another color.

  7. I also love the padlet phrases on cards that can be rearranged. Rebecca's found poem is beautiful to look at and thinking about old legends that take you to different parts of the world. Wonderful gifts!

  8. It's nice that such warm friendly gifts could keep you cool until the AC returned. I love love Becky's found poem--perfectly mysterious--and remixable haiku cards a la Hamish. Next time the swap comes around remind me to say YES!

  9. You and Hamish are dependable and enduring! "Poeming librarian" is a great term. Glad you have your A/C!!!

  10. Linda, you are certainly right that it is HOT out here. My husband loves the house cold but we have to come to terms about how cold it sometimes is. When you walk into my house you will laugh seeing me in long sleeves shirts or sweaters. I also love the term Poeming Librarian. The gifts your received are priceless.zmary Lee also made a oracle deck for me from my words. Aren't they fun to play with. Beck and I were partners once and had so much fun. See you on Sunday.

  11. Hooray for the air conditioning! It's been such a great summer for swaps. And the term, 'Poeming Librarian', brilliant. Love that Hamish helped you with the arrangement of the Oracle deck.

  12. These swap gifts are as refreshing and invigorating as a breath of air-conditioned air! Becky and MaryLee's gifts show how rich the swap can be. I'm looking forward to reading more collaborative efforts from you and Hamish with your oracle deck! Keep on poeming, Librarian!

  13. IMHO -- Head, Bird, Ox is one of your (maybe THE) very best so far. Love, love, love.

Also, fun to see some haiku that you and Hamish were able to agree upon!

  14. I love the idea of an oracle deck - so fun to take your own words and reconfigure them into new poems. And Head, Bird, Ox is just gorgeous - such spare, evocative language.
    "Bird swallows sky"

    Thanks for sharing.

  15. Beautiful poetic gifts from Rebecca and Mary Lee. I especially love the oracle cards! They must be fun to play with.

  16. I enjoyed the poetry presentations Linda, particularly the flexibility of the oracle cards. Here's to Haiku!

  17. Thank you for sharing your gifts, Linda - and not just from Rebecca and Mary Lee! You are a brilliant 'poeming librarian' and your blog is one of the 'coolest' spots on the internet. And not just because of the AC! ;)

  18. I am playing a bit of catch up and wanted to stop by and say that I am glad that you enjoyed your swaps! it is always so much fun.
