I Miss My Summer Self

Hello Poets,

My summer-self was delightfully busy and happy. She was full of seeing family on trips that were little vacations. There were very few deadlines or disappointments...just long days of doing what I wanted. Sigh.

In Autumn I am also busy--less carefree. I'm grateful to be working at a job that I enjoy. And, sometimes, missing summer puts me in a mood. The poem below is in response to a prompt in Georgia Heard's October Writing Calendar: Light & Autumn. It captures an autumn mood.

My autumn self is keeping-up OK.  I really do love to be in my PJ's with a cup of tea or cocoa by 7 pm.

How do you feel in autumn?

Thank you, Patricia at Reverie for hosting our round-up this weekend. I look forward to reading all the goodness.

  1. Such a wistful ode to autumn, Linda. I love how your concrete form gives life to the "Goodbyes and sighs...steady arrows." I'm an autumn girl all-in -- from the first tinged maple leaf to the chorus of golds to the leaf showers in their last gasps of life.

  2. I love the ring of “goodbyes and sighs.” 😊 Fall always makes me a touch melancholy too, but then a pair of boots or a cozy sweater can cheer me up until that first magic snowflake flies!

  5. I love autumn! It’s been cool and sunny, now rainy and I suddenly feel like making soup and warm things to eat. Love the shape of your poem, edging towards fall things. Hope work is going well.

  6. I love Autumn, too, Linda, but you have shown us a wistful look as you return to the busy work days. Now, it's nearly 7, and our sun isn't up, yet! I love your poem, especially "lamplight gold", exactly right!

  7. This is one of those poems that takes on meaning for the reader. I am worrying about my daughter whose mother-in-law is dying. It is such a hard reality, but your poem brings me to that final word…peace. I am praying that she finds peace.

  8. Your poignant poem captures the irony of fall -- beautiful yet melancholic. The arrow shape of your poem reminds us that regardless of how we might feel, time and life move forward, bringing other things. Your last lines provide comfort with the "gathering in" feeling of fall as we approach winter.

  9. I love fall, Linda. It's a season full of warm colors and warmer clothes. I like my slow mornings with a cup of tea on the couch. Your poem speaks of longing for a season gone by but also appreciation for the "now." Beautiful.

  10. I love the flight of words in your poem and its wistful tone. I am still struggling to adjust to the pace of life back in school, though I've been enjoying every moment of autumn's beauty. Maybe our summer selves can get together one of these days?

  12. I like your "lamplight gold" too! But I love the sun, its warmth and how it lingers in summer, and my schedule is freer then also. So maybe we can dream som summer as we move deeper into fall. Thanks for the lovely and peace filled poem Linda!

  13. My autumn slef loves early mornings just the dog and I with the fire going. I love the lamplight gold and falling leaves. I've been playing with gelli leaf prints.

  14. "falling leaves lamplight gold
    the sun lowers"
Epically beautiful, Linda. I like what you've done with layout and spacing, which visualize the graduality of it all. And I'm with you--when the sun is down, I'm done!

  15. I love the words lamplight gold, Linda. The format is well done for a falling leaves' poem. I am an early PJ dresser. It feels so good to just lounge around.

  16. I love the shape of the poem, Linda, like a flock of geese headed out of town. And I love the "lamplight gold." Autumn is my favorite time of year and huzzah for cozy pjs and tea!

  17. Linda, your poem is so peaceful and longing. I think the shape of the poem is beautiful, an arrow and also a migrating summer bird taking off to fly south. I'm glad you are there in the library for your middle schoolers.

  18. It's taken quite a while to recalibrate my body and psyche to more of a "country road" pacing to life rather than the "roller coaster" pacing of the teaching calendar. But I can still feel that wistfulness in my bones. Savor every scrap of "me time" you can hoard!

  19. "Lamplight gold"! That's one of my favorite fall colors, and now it was a name. Thank you. This is a lovely poem. My fall has been tinged with longing too.
