One of my favorite memes from social media ...
Can I get an AMEN?
One of
the things that helped me get to school with a smile on my face each morning
the last half of this year was a podcast called, The Slowdown with
US Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith.
Because I
listen to Smith while driving, I can only concentrate on the conversation she
is having with me and the audible words and sounds of the poems she reads each
day. However, I can tell you that often, I am scribbling snippets of what
sticks with me in my notebook later.
Each
podcast is no longer than 5 or 6 minutes in length. Smith introduces a poem
with some background information on the poet or the piece and then reads it in
her delightful, rich voice.
If you
haven't discovered The Slowdown yet, I hope you will
give it a try. It will enrich your listening and writing day.

today. Take a peek at all the wonderful poetry that's waiting for you there.
And, happy summer!

ReplyDeleteWhat a treat to find your blog featuring Tracy K. Smith also Linda! I was thinking about sending a call for more poems celebrating Smith, but time got away from me. I don't know if I could pick out a favorite I do like the poem I posted, BEEHIVE by Jean Toomer.
ReplyDeleteAmen or as I like to say Awomen for having the summer to recover–I'd love to have that but I teach year round. I will have a wee bit more time for a few of my classes didn't fill this session. Here's to sailing off with the lovely boat art you created!
This is a delight to see that you, too, are sharing about Tracy K. Smith's podcast, Linda. I will be sure to start listening! Wishing you a marvelous last day & a treasure of a 'recovery'!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up about Tracy's podcast, Linda. Will have to check it out. Love your book page art (BLUE!). :) Happy Almost Recovery Time.
ReplyDeleteThis is also one of my favorite podcasts.
ReplyDeleteThrilled for your weeks ahead to revive, recover, refresh after the 2018-2019 marathon dear Linda.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you for adding to the Tracy K. Smith joy. I received WADE IN THE WATER as part of a goody back last year & feel elevated by it.
I didn't know about the LOC/Tracy K. Smith podcast until Michelle's blog this week & I'm glad you are underlining how nourishing they are. Must try them out.
Thank you for the reminder about The Slowdown. Between you and Michelle, I will not forget! Hooray for June and summer vacation! Here's to plenty of time to rest, read, write, and re-energize!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all -- AMEN!!
ReplyDeleteI just listened to my first episode of The Slowdown. Love her voice. This seems like a 5 minute routine I need to institute!
I had downloaded the Slowdown and then forgotten about it. Thanks for the reminder. I will listen on my daily walk.
ReplyDeleteI actually am not a podcast-listener (yet), but my older daughter really enjoys The Slowdown. Your sailing art is very soothing :-)
ReplyDeleteNow that we've moved, I have an hour commute three days a week and am always looking for podcasts. I look forward to listening to The Slowdown. I also enjoy the TED Radio Hour and Throughline from NPR and Jen Hatmaker's For the Love podcasts.
ReplyDeleteGreat recs! Adding Jen Hatmaker now. Thanks!
DeleteFirst off -- AMEN! Definitely not off, but in recovery. Especially this year. My morning drive podcast lineup starts with The Slowdown, BirdNote, and then either It's Been a Minute with Sam Sanders or Pop Culture Happy Hour. The perfect antidotes for a depressing news cycle. Happy summer to you, friends. 9 days to go for me! -- Christie @ https://wonderingandwondering.wordpress.com/
ReplyDeleteI do love It's Been a Minute. Great recs. Thanks! I need to check out Bird Note
ReplyDeleteThanks for introducing me to The Slowdown. I've subscribed. Now I just need to make time to listen/
ReplyDeleteI'll give you an Amen, Linda. Happy rejuvenating! I am planning on listening to the Slowdown. Thanks for the info. BTW, your recycled paper art is a beautiful one this week. It puts me in the mood for summer. We actually spent a lovely afternoon at the beach on Saturday.
